Why August Feels Different: The August Shift

August is kind of a strange month.

It's still summer. It's still hot. There are still vacations happening, iced coffees being consumed like there is a shortage, and every intention of squeezing in "just one more" pool day (got to get our money’s worth!), beach trip, or backyard barbecue.

And yet, every year around this time, I start noticing a shift.

I've lived through enough Augusts to recognize it. It's not exactly stress. It's not sadness. It's more like a low-level awareness that something is changing.

The funny thing is, even when I don't have a major life transition coming up, I still feel it.

Maybe it's because August sits between two seasons. Maybe it's because so many of us grew up measuring our lives by the school calendar. Or maybe it's because stores start putting out fall decorations before we've finished our sunscreen. Whatever the reason, August has a way of nudging us into "what's next?" mode.

One minute you're planning a summer weekend. The next you're thinking about September schedules, work goals, holiday plans, or that thing you've been meaning to get organized for months. Suddenly you're cleaning out a junk drawer at 9 p.m. on a Tuesday and wondering who you've become.

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

Over the years, I've talked to enough people to realize that many of us experience this same shift. Parents feel it. People without kids feel it. Empty nesters feel it. Young professionals feel it. There is something about August that makes us take stock.

How am I doing? What has this year looked like so far? What's working in my life right now? What isn't?

Those aren't bad questions to ask. In fact, they're often helpful. The problem comes when we start living too far ahead.

I've lost count of how many August days I've spent thinking about everything coming next instead of enjoying what's happening right now. Because here's the truth: September is incredibly reliable. It always shows up. The routines come back. The calendars fill up. The emails find us.

September doesn't need our help arriving.

A cozy late-summer workspace with a notebook, coffee mug, candle, and greenery, representing reflection and seasonal transition.

That's something I have to remind myself every year.

I've also learned that not every feeling needs to be fixed. Sometimes we're so quick to label ourselves as stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed that we miss what's actually happening. Sometimes we're simply in transition. And transitions, even good ones, can feel a little uncomfortable.

Maybe this August is an opportunity to notice the shift without letting it take over. To acknowledge that a new season is around the corner while still enjoying the one we're in.

Take the evening walk. Say yes to the ice cream. Sit outside a little longer after dinner. Call a friend you've been meaning to call. Watch one more sunset. Leave a few things unchecked on the to-do list. They'll still be there tomorrow.

If August feels a little different this year, know that you're in good company. A lot of us are feeling it too.

The season is shifting. Life keeps moving. And that's okay.

For now, there's still summer left to enjoy. Let's not spend all of August worrying about September.
