The Mental Well Community Connections: Joshua U.

Tell us a little about yourself—your background, where you are now, and anything that feels important to who you are today.

I am a lucky husband & father to two wonderful boys. I make & install signs for a living at a local college. In my freetime, I shoot pool and play ultimate frisbee. Most evenings, you can find me on my front porch, listening to the world mellow out.

What does a “good day” look like for you in this season of life?

Many paths can lead me to a good day, but the first one that comes to mind would involve a turned-off alarm, a couple of household chores (honestly), as much ultimate as my body can handle that day, and a firepit in the backyard to finish the night.

What’s something small that has been bringing you joy lately, and why does it matter to you?

A couple of years ago, I started cooking the meals for my family. I was pretty inept at first, but gradually I got better. It gives me that old-school hunter/provider feeling when I cook. I know it sounds silly, but I just get a lot of joy seeing people eat my food.

What is something you’re passionate about when it comes to mental health, and what shaped that perspective?

Journaling is something I value a lot more nowadays. It helped me through some tough spots where I don't think I would have been as okay without it. I can go back and read how I felt at a particular moment, but with a different perspective which is good for growth.

How do you take care of your mental health in your day-to-day life? What has been most helpful?

I keep active physically. I journal when I need to. Being around my kids probably helps the most.

What helps you get through difficult moments?

Sometimes music helps, or taking a walk. Talking with someone I trust usually benefits me the most because I get feedback I couldn't have given myself.

When do you feel most like yourself?

When I feel confident.

What does “community” mean to you, and where do you find it in your life?

Community is anywhere you find your people. Shared values, shared interest, shared location. You can have communities in many facets of your life. Among others, I find community at the pool hall, on the frisbee field, and in my home.

What’s something you wish more people understood about mental health?

I wish more people understood it's not a choice you can turn off or ignore.

What is one habit, routine, or mindset that has made a positive difference in your life?

I make it a habit of thinking, "I get to" in those moments where "I have to" do something. It helps me feel gratitude for my life.

What are you currently working toward or hoping for in the next year or two?

My kids would kill me if it took 1-2 years so I'll revise this to say I am currently working towards having a completed treeless fort in the backyard in the next few months.

Just for fun—what’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?

Learning a new frisbee throw in the backyard or relaxing on my porch.
