The Mental Well Community Connections: Lillie U.
Tell us a little about yourself—your background, where you are now, and anything that feels important to who you are today.
My name’s Lillie and I am 19. I’m a full-time student at Towson University and work at a preschool as an assistant and Art teacher.
What does a “good day” look like for you in this season of life?
Relaxing and hanging out with people I love.
What’s something small that has been bringing you joy lately, and why does it matter to you?
Lately, my work has been bringing me joy because I get to see my friends and students. Seeing my students do art lessons I created brings me joy because they are excited.
What is something you’re passionate about when it comes to mental health, and what shaped that perspective?
I am very passionate about therapy. I personally believe every person could use therapy in some way or another. I used to be very scared of therapy until I tried it, and my perspective forever has changed and now I recommend it to everyone!
How do you take care of your mental health in your day-to-day life? What has been most helpful?
The most helpful thing that I have found to help me with my mental health is learning my triggers so I can better understand and take care of myself.
What helps you get through difficult moments?
In difficult moments I find breathing helps me get through.
When do you feel most like yourself?
I feel most like myself when I am in a good outfit and am doing something I love like teaching or art.
What does “community” mean to you, and where do you find it in your life?
Community to me means a group of people who you can rely on and get help. In my life my community is school, work and family.
What’s something you wish more people understood about mental health?
I wish more people understood that mental health isn’t scary to get help. Once you get over the mental hump of reaching out for help, it gets better.
What is one habit, routine, or mindset that has made a positive difference in your life?
One habit that made a positive difference in my life was mediating everyday if possible.
What are you currently working toward or hoping for in the next year or two?
I am working towards getting my Art Education degree at Towson University.
If someone reading this is struggling right now, what would you want them to hear?
I want them to know that reaching out for help doesn’t make you weak, it actually makes you stronger.
Just for fun—what’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
Relaxing with friends and family.
